Control4 Link: Using Link to Support Gen 1 / Gen 2 Control4 Devices on Control4 OS 4.1 or later

Overview

Control4 OS 4.1 and later doesn't support the original Gen1 / Gen 2 Lighting Modules. Chowmain's Link Driver  provides a solution which can bridge two primary controllers together in a OS agnostic way to bridge access to Gen 1 / Gen 2 Control4 Zigbee devices from a compatible controller to a X4.1 controller

This solution can also act as a transition technology to allow Gen 1 / Gen 2 devices to be slowly upgraded over time, or updated later, or to simply allow two different systems to communicate

Limitations

  1. This solution is not recommended to allow old touchscreens to operate. It is instead recommended to upgrade the touchscreens
  2. There may be other devices which are not supported by the bridge. Contact Chowmain support if there are Control4 devices which are not detected on the Client System which do not have X4.1 compatible drivers
  3. In this usecase, it is recommended that any X4.1 compatible devices are moved to the client controller, and the server controller is used solely for devices that cannot be used in X4.1
  4. You cannot have the server / client on the same Control4 controller to solve this particular use-case.  Two different setups are required, although, only one needs to be accessible by customers.

Requirements

  1. Controller used by the customer. This can be any version of OS later than OS3.3.0 (including 4.1 or later). This is the "Client Controller"
  2. Controller which is used exclusively to host the old zigbee network. It is recommended this controller is OS3 (ideally OS3.3.0) or later, however, it must be C4 OS 4.0 or earlier.  OS2.10.6 is the earliest version supported. This is the "Server" Controller. This controller does not need to be registered
  3. 4Sight / Connect is NOT required on either side.
  4. As per the docs, you will require 2 separate licences. Both controllers require a Link Licence: https://chowmain.software/drivers/control4-project-bridge#documents

Procedure

1. Ensure the server controller is running X4.0.0 or earlier
2. Ensure all Gen 1 / Gen 2 modules are operational on the server controller.
3. Install Link Server on the Server Controller as docs: https://chowmain.software/drivers/control4-project-bridge#documents
4. On the OS4.1+ / Client Controller, install Link Client as per Docs and Autosetup the devices: https://chowmain.software/drivers/control4-project-bridge#documents
