Testing Camera Drivers using VLC

Testing Camera Drivers using VLC

When a camera driver's Video test passes and you are still unable to view an rtsp stream on the Navigators, the first troubleshooting step is to confirm whether the issue is inside Control4 or outside of Control4.

Requirements
You MUST be onsite (remote access via OVRC will not work for this troubleshooting)
Installed copy of VLC from https://www.videolan.org/vlc/
The computer you run VLC from must be on the same VLAN as the Control4 controller (and ideally, on the same switch)

Steps
Copy the full URL displayed in the Get Video URL test:
Open VLC

Press CTRL+N to open the Open Media window on the Network tab
Paste your url into the field and press Play

Enter your credentials as required

Results
The video plays as expected
This confirms the following:
  1. The video device is providing the correct RTSP url
  2. The driver is configured correctly (insofar as providing Control4 the correct RTSP URL
Your next steps are:
  1. Confirm that all Navigators (T4/T3/OSD on controllers/Mobile apps) are having the issue locally and remotely
  2. Check the encoding in VLC, Tools > Codec Information:
  3. You are looking to have:
    1. Stream 0's Codec = H264 -  and Video resolution match the above.
The video doesn't play properly or VLC throws an an error
This confirms that there is an issue outside of Control4 and our driver that you need to troubleshoot before reaching out to Control4 or Chowmain support.
