CONTROL4 RATGDO: FAQ

CONTROL4 RATGDO: FAQ

ratgdo is an open-source device that provides local control and feedback for garage door openers without reliance on cloud services. It connects directly to your garage door motor and network, allowing integration with smart home platforms such as Control4, ELAN, and others.

By bridging your garage door to your home automation system, ratgdo enables control commands (open, close, stop) and real-time feedback on door status, light, and motion — all securely within your local network.

What models of garage doors does ratgdo support?

ratgdo supports Chamberlain and LiftMaster garage door openers that use Security+ 1.0 and Security+ 2.0 protocols.

What firmware do I use?

The Control4 driver is designed to work specifically with the ESPHome firmware for ratgdo.

It is critical that the ESPHome firmware version is installed — other firmware variants (such as ratgdo-native or MQTT) will not work with Control4.

You can confirm that you have the correct firmware if your ratgdo web interface looks similar to the screenshot below.

Control is working, however feedback is intermittent

If you notice that control commands (open/close) work but feedback is unreliable, it’s likely due to multiple systems integrating with the same ratgdo device simultaneously.

This issue is commonly observed when both Control4 and Home Assistant are connected at the same time, as event stream feedback becomes inconsistent.

Solution:
Disconnect other integrations (e.g., Home Assistant) and keep only Control4 connected. Once isolated, feedback will return to being accurate and consistent.

ratgdo utilises the Wi-Fi built into the ESP32 chipset, which does not include an external antenna. As a result, its wireless signal strength can be limited.

Commands from Control4 are intermittent.

Ensure your ratgdo device is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network with a strong signal. Weak or unstable connections can cause intermittent control or delayed responses from the garage door opener.
